Lighting

When it came to the lighting of the level there were many issues that came up like building the lighting and making modeled lamps to for the light source but it didn't fix the attenuation radius.

What I did was create an emissive material that where my team can adjust the color based off the temperature setting and the intensity. What I intended to do was to use this material to place over an object like a large plane and hide it in game seen in the image slide to keep a large area well lit.

Mechanics

To put more focus on the level design, I wanted to go with a simple yet interactive approach with the mechanics. The explosive barrels when the player shoots at them will trigger them to explode using an area of effect (AOE). which can cause damage to any actor like the wall but also you can damage the player and zombies as well.

To make it more exciting, I wanted to tie in the wall to the explosion so when the player destroys the barrel near a wall, the wall will explode using the radial impulse from the explosion barrel making the complete wall destroy itself while the broken pieces spawn and fly out using the radial impulse.

Conclusion

The City Streets level feels like it was my best work that I did along with the Sewers level. The way how everything transitioned smoothly into the next area is what I didn't really expect until I drew it out. There are still improvements like creating a model for the destroyed wall, the rubble, vertex painting and more work on the buildings but the biggest takeaway from this is the introduction to the Brute when you enter the street. A lot of great feedback from players liking that its optional to fight it and feel rewarded or continue through the level. Thanks to the team and the play testers, I feel this was a huge success.
